degree studies
academic rigour + profession

At the CTCA, we’re not just about creating beautiful images; we’re also about the exciting world of academic writing and research. As part of all of our degree programmes, you’ll learn the art of independent research and paper writing—skills that are absolutely essential. From nailing your writing style and perfecting your referencing to conducting top-notch research and reflecting deeply on your work, we’ve got you covered. Our research practice ethos is all about boosting your critical thinking and helping you express your unique ideas and experiences in a polished, academic way.

skill development

You’ll master the skills to independently research, evaluate, interpret, and critically analyse information, and then present it in well-structured arguments and compelling theoretically dense research papers. In the age of GenAI, we emphasise academic integrity and teach you the right way to cite your sources, even when you are using GenAI to assist your research and practice. Plus, you’ll develop the ability to stand out by turning your research into dynamic seminar presentations using top-notch rhetorical techniques which is really important when you are working with clients or galleries.

theory + research
Contextual Studies (CS) is the theory module that spans your entire degree at the CTCA, and here we take your academic game to the next level. While you might wonder why theory matters when you’re here to create, the beauty and meaning of your work are deeply informed by these “thinky-thinky” things – the heady stuff that you probably don’t even know you are doing! CS forms the backbone of our interdisciplinary arts programme, equipping you with critical tools to analyse, interpret, and ultimately to create compelling visual media.
By integrating theories from art history, literature, film, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and more, CS offers an exciting intellectual adventure that cements your education as a comprehensive bachelor’s degree.
In CS, you’ll interrogate cultural phenomena such as art, design, TV, film, advertising, literature, and consumer behaviour (among others), developing a framework to understand their roles in shaping ideologies and social identities. This knowledge helps position your work within broader cultural contexts and engage in scholarly dialogues across disciplines. The trans-disciplinary nature of CS encourages collaboration, enriching your practice with diverse perspectives. You’ll learn to question everything, think critically, argue convincingly, and write compellingly, preparing you to stand out in a world saturated with superficial content. Many of our students continue their intellectual exploration through Master’s degrees worldwide, using CS as a launchpad to navigate and contribute meaningfully to contemporary visual culture.
When it comes to critical academic research, we don’t mess around. We prepare our students to seamlessly progress to postgraduate degrees. Our research practice is focused on aiding students to become leading critical thinkers and academic writers, and one of the ways is through the final year research project where you’ll conduct a year-long self-directed project. This project encourages you to explore topics of your choosing, usually inline with your major, thereby elevating your portfolios with specialised knowledge and expertise. This process not only deepens your academic prowess, but also hones your ability to work independently and generate meaningful knowledge, a crucial skill beyond academia. Ultimately, all of this prepares you for professional and personal success by fostering autonomy and intellectual growth.
professional practice + business studies

It’s deeply fulfilling (and fun!) to do an arts degree, but we’re sure your parents and friends worry that you’ll end up as a starving artist a la Van Gogh. Rest assured, we’re ready to future-proof you, and you’ll (very probably) come away with both ears. Business Studies (BS) and Professional Practice (PP) introduce you to the exciting – but sometimes daunting – world of professional life. Whilst very similar, BS is geared toward the design degrees, and PP is specific to the contemporary art students. In these courses, we start you on the road to making yourself an industry leader. These classes are designed to bring out your unique strengths, attributes, and interests, guiding you to think about your unique professional offerings. Through engaging activities and lively discussions, you’ll learn how to position yourself, and navigate how to maximise the unique value in your work.

Guided by industry giants, you’ll cover a wide range of professional conduct practices, including legal concepts and financial management (accounting is actually more fun than you realise!). Never dry, but always interesting, it is there that we empower you to feel confident as you enter the world out there. Our experts also explore various creative industries, giving you the chance to envision exciting career paths, and understand how to position yourself successfully in the marketplace. These are skills that you get to practise in a real-world setting when completing your mandatory internship.
By blending practical skills with personal development, we ensure that you are well-prepared for your future. The course is filled with opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and self-discovery, paving the way for the journey to professional readiness, and you come away with a comprehensive toolkit that ensures that you’ll thrive in your chosen career.
