We’re living in a time like no other. As digital platforms intersect with information, media, and creative content, ideas now travel across borders in seconds. But we’re not just finding faster ways to keep up with the news, book a room or pay for things – every interaction between a brand and its audience is now designed to be intuitive, engaging and meaningful. Welcome to the Creative Era.

From visual identities and user interfaces to storytelling and social media, creative services are now the engine of human connection. Whether it’s a local bakery or a multinational fintech company, businesses today invest in well-designed websites, branded content and seamless user experiences. Who doesn’t pause for a moment to enjoy Google’s daily doodle? Or appreciate the sleek feel of productivity apps like Notion or the intuitive flow of Uber Eats?

With new platforms and tools emerging almost daily, the demand for designers, developers, and content creators has never been greater. According to UNESCO’s Global Report (2022), the creative economy remains one of the world’s fastest-growing economic sectors, contributing 3.1% to global GDP and employing over 50 million people worldwide. Thanks to technology, creators can now reach audiences and clients globally, from a home studio in Cape Town to a design firm in Seoul.

But it’s not just the creative industries that are evolving. AI, automation and digital transformation are reshaping the global job market. In The Future of Jobs Report 2023, the World Economic Forum noted that machines and algorithms now perform 34% of total task hours, and that figure is expected to reach 43% by 2027.

What does this mean for human workers? The repetitive tasks are being automated, which elevates the value of human creativity, empathy and complex problem-solving. Skills once considered ‘soft’ are now the bedrock of innovation and resilience in the workforce.

In fact, creativity has remained the most in-demand soft skill on LinkedIn for five consecutive years. In South Africa, WEF data shows that creativity, critical thinking, and originality rank among the top skills needed to thrive in the 21st-century workplace, and they are closely aligned with analytical reasoning and digital literacy.

How do you prepare for the future?

Designing with purpose

Elective Makers Lab

At Cape Town Creative Academy, students in the elective Makers Lab have taken their creative skills outside of the classroom, collaborating with the Orthocross Amputee Foundation to design prosthetic covers that go beyond functionality. Led by CTCA lecturer Phillip van der Walt, a product designer and artist specialising in CAD modelling and design for additive manufacturing, students designed and manufactured covers which allow amputees to express their individuality, their personal style, and feel confident, empowered, and proud of who they are.
